How to Clean, Display, and Store Your Mineral Specimens
Cleaning by Mineral Type
Fluorite and Quartz
Rinse under lukewarm water. A soft toothbrush removes loose debris. Avoid hot water — thermal shock can cause internal fractures, especially in fluorite.
Calcite
Never use acid or vinegar — calcite dissolves in acid. Lukewarm water only. Dry thoroughly.
Pyrite
Keep dry. Pyrite can oxidize in humid conditions (pyrite disease). Wipe with a dry cloth. Store with silica gel packets in humid climates.
Selenite
Never submerge in water — selenite is water-soluble. Dust with a soft dry cloth only.
Display Tips
- Avoid direct sunlight for amethyst and purple fluorite — UV exposure fades color over time
- Control humidity for pyrite and copper minerals — consider a display case with silica gel
- Use mineral tack or display stands to secure specimens on shelves
Storage
Wrap specimens individually in acid-free tissue. Label everything — mine, mineral, date acquired. Store in a cool, dry location away from temperature swings. Rough material can be stored in labeled bins or bags.
Handling
Always support specimens from below. Skin oils can affect some minerals over time — handle from the matrix when possible. Never force crystals apart from matrix rock.
